THE FORGERS of SPANISH HISTORY
To complete the unrealistic view on the Communist Republican prisoners and Spanish postCivil War repression, it is absolute essential to know some other latest facts which show how General Francisco Franco was on the side (as well as fully protected) by the Western free democracies and how Franco fully collaborated with them in their fierce fight against Stalin´s project to turn Spanish II Republic into a Communist Totalitarian Dictatorship -Soviet style. And the prisoners in those concentration camps were proved to be Communist colaborationists.
Thanks to the declassification and publishing of all secret documents from the KGB Moscou Archives ( "The Black Book of Communism" Harvard University Press.1998) and of Churchill´s secret archives ( "Churchill and the Secret Service" David Stafford.Edinburgh University.1997 Abacus History) we know some essential facts and figures which could complete the biased view reflected in that article by A. Watkins.
In 1940 Churchill was faced with a dilemma . Germany was winning the war across Europe; Spain was neutral but, if Spain entered the war in support of Germany it would threaten the movement of allied shipping across the Mediterranean. In May 1940 Churchill charged Alan Hillgarth (a British Naval attaché in Madrid Br Embassy) with a secret and urgent mission :to keep Spain out of the II World War by buying off its leading generals . Churchill had arranged with the British Treasury to deposit 2.5 million pounds in an account of the Swiss Bank Corporation in New York. Payments to Franco´s generals were made in installments geared to the views they aired which were monitored by British Intelligence.

By July 1940, – four months before Franco´s meeting with Hitler in Hendaye- the scheme had paid out all the money and Franco´s loyalty to the Allies was guaranteed. The arrangements by Serrano Suñer for the Hendaye meeting with Hitler were just a pantomime, a real fake .

Documentary evidence of all these facts and bribes was uncovered in London among transcripts of memoranda from the British Embassy in New York by Professor David Stafford , a historian at Edinburgh University . They outline the payments and detail meeting between Churchill and his Secret Service contacts.

Thanks to Franco´s fierce anti-Communism and thanks to his loyalty to the Allies which supported him throughout his lifetime , Spain could pave its way towards the healthy mature democracy which emerged in 1975.

According to what is proved in the book “Los Mitos de la Guerra Civil Española “ .by Pio Moa (La Esfera de los Libros.2003) the coward Republican Generals and leaders helped themselves by organising their own escape and abandoning the troup of leftist/communist soldiers who had helped them and fought for the Communist II Spanish Republic.

According to the figures given on the Spanish Civil War by the most reputed historian on the matter ,Ramón Salas Larrazabal (“Historia General de la Guerra de España” and”Historia del Ejército Popular de la Republica”.Quirón Ediciones), about 55.000 people were killed by Franco´s Spanish Nationalist Army against the 75.000 killed by the Communist Frente Popular during the war. And the figures given on the Franco´s post-war repression were very similar to the figures given for the repression carried out in France by General Charles de Gaulle and his Allies.

According to what is reported in the Ph D.Thesis “Historia de la Persecución Religiosa en España:1936-1939” by A.Montero Moreno (BAC Madrid.1999) , 6.832 innocent priests, nuns, bishops and archbishops were killed in Spain by Marxists Republicans in what has already been defined as the First Huge 20th Century European Holocaust , shortly before that in Germany against the Jews.
Undoubtedly, all these facts and figures will help readers to have a better approach on the Guerra Incivil Española del ´36 , now so deeply manipulated by radical Zapatero´s Ley de la Memoria Histórica.
